This rare and distinctive perennial, native to South Africa, has slumbered in relative obscurity since it was first cultivated at Kew Gardens in 1917. However, with renewed interest in drought-tolerant plants, it is now sought for its ability to withstand dry conditions and its architectural form of prickly winged stems and pointed dark green leaves. Large clusters of stunning daisy-shaped lavender blooms with dark purple centers continue to open throughout the summer. This plant looks particularly beautiful when paired with low grasses in well-drained locations.
