At home in shade or sun, blue wood aster is a lovely early fall bloomer. Small, daisy-like flowers of pale blue with cheerful yellow centers completely envelop the plant. In the sun, it has an open upright habit and can reach 5' tall when flowering. In the shade this aster has a more relaxed attitude, arching over to weave among neighboring plants. Symphyotrichum cordifolium prefers average soil that is dry to moist but well drained and is drought tolerant once established. It is attractive to butterflies and is deer resistant.
