Fargesia robusta ‘Green Screen’ ('Green Screen' Bamboo or Fargesia 'Pingwu') has dark green foliage and light green culms, new shoots are hairy and rusty red upon emergence from the ground in early spring. The culm sheaths persist and soon fade to a light color, almost white, giving the culms a very attractive checkerboard look in the spring through early summer. This ornamental grass does best in full sun to partial shade. It is also more sun tolerant than most other Fargesia but ideally would prefer protection from the hot afternoon sun. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments.
