This green-leaved form of Hakone Grass may have been overlooked while variegated and gold cultivars grabbed the spotlight. But the species offers a tranquil green often needed in landscape design. In addition, Hakonechloa macra tolerates more sun and drier soil, and it is hardier and faster growing than most of its cultivars. It grows in a mounding, cascading shape, and spreads very slowly by rhizomes. Leaves intermingle when it is planted close together as a groundcover, and in containers, foliage spills over the edges. This species comes from the Mount Hakone area in Japan and prefers rich, organic, well-drained soil.
